As a graduate of Film Studies and Literature at the University of Essex, I have learned that a visual mind benefits working in PR. According to a survey by youthemployment.org.uk, more than 60% of graduates admit that they feel unprepared for full-time employment. For me, having a visual mind has eased the transition from education to working life. So, if you are among the one in three graduates who think their degree is useless, according to The Express, then you might be surprised by these things that a visual mind can bring to PR.
Storytelling is an important aspect of PR. The ability to tell a story can make or break whether you are able to sell your client’s product to the media. Work you’ve contributed in your studies must always tell a story. Likewise, when speaking to a journalist, you should be hooking them with the story of the product, service and benefit to their audience. Having a visual mind gives you the ability to tell a story and paint a picture in your listeners' minds so that the product captivates them before having seen it.
2. Attention to detail
Attention to detail is crucial in PR. Whether you’re clipping coverage or sending an email, attention to detail is imperative. When studying, you would have been taught to consider every section of a text. Every single inch of a film frame will be important to the overall scene. The smallest details should be noticed to understand the importance of the story. In PR, your visual thinking will be vital in ensuring that there are no crucial mistakes that could lose your client coverage.
3. Considering the bigger picture
With film studies, students will work on projects. Whilst working on these tasks, a visually minded person will always be thinking ahead of the start of their project to the end result. You will think in steps and be able to picture what you expect as a result. In PR, considering the bigger picture is beneficial. This will let you use your time wisely to achieve your goal among other tasks assigned to you.
4. Time management
At university time management is everything. Once you’ve missed a lecture you’ll be behind instantly. In the workplace, it’s important to have your time management under control or else it can affect not only your own work, but your team’s too. Plan ahead and create lists so that you can prioritise and motivate yourself to clear off the list. This will help you to have better time management in working through your assigned tasks.
5. Rich content
If you have studied a course involving film or literature, then it is likely that you have been trained to have a visual mind. You will understand that every detail in a film text or a novel has overall importance to the story. Thus, when producing press releases in PR you will know that you must tell a story to your readers. You’ll know that every detail, even the smallest, is crucial in helping journalists to visualise the event and make it interesting. This ability will allow for high-quality work to be produced in PR.
To conclude, visually minded people in PR are beneficial to creating impact for a client and their product. If you’d like to learn more about how Mash could help you bring your brand’s story to life, drop us an email.
